Devotional on Psalm 5 — A Prayer for Guidance

A Psalm of David.

There are twelve verses in this psalm of David and they are split into sections. The sections kind of ping pong between what David determines to do in the midst of the actions of others that are contrary to the ways of God. There is a powerful revelation in these verses for all those who are seeking discernment and direction in these days.

My hope is that you will be encouraged today. I know these are tough times, but you were born for these days. The word of God is full of hope, perspective and wisdom. Confusing times do not require complicated solutions. There is a serenity in simplicity. May these five simple reminders from King David bless you and provoke you to continue to move forward in expectant faith, confident hope, and enduring love.

Let’s break it down:

Verses 1-3 APPEAL TO THE GOD OF HEAVEN

"Give ear to my words, Oh Lord, consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry, My King and my God, for to You I will pray. My voice You shall hear in the morning, Oh Lord; in the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up."

Start each day by looking up and directing your words, your meditations, your voice and your prayers to the God Who hears and answers all those who call on His name.

Verses 4-6 APPRECIATE THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD

"For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with You. The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity. You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man."

Understand that God is just and He is holy and that there is a day of reckoning for all those who boastfully speak false things and enjoy the wicked fruits of deception.

Verses 7-8 ACKNOWLEDGE THE MERCY OF GOD

"But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; in fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple. Lead me, Oh Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make Your way straight before my face."

Reflect on the multitude of His mercies and boldly run into His presence to worship Him knowing that He will clearly lead you and show you the way that you must go.

Verses 9-10 AGREE WITH THE JUSTICE OF GOD

"For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is destruction; their throat is an open tomb; they flatter with their tongue. Pronounce them guilty, Oh God! Let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions, for they have rebelled against You."

Present your case before the Lord regarding those who operate in opposition to the righteous ways of the Lord and trust Him to deal with them accordingly.

Verses 11-12 ALIGN WITH THE BLESSING AND FAVOR OF GOD

"But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; let those also who love Your name be joyful in You. For You, Oh Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield."

Joyfully trust in the favor of the Lord as He surrounds you, defends you and blesses you as you walk in loving alignment with Him and His ways.
